Addiction treatment

Discover Our Partial Hospitalization Program

When you’re struggling with an addiction to drugs or alcohol, it takes over every aspect of your life. Your relationships, career, family life, and more will begin to suffer. Your psychological and physical health may decline, and it could feel like you have no control over anything. While it’s overwhelming, treatment for addiction is available, and recovery is possible.

There are different levels of care available, including a partial hospitalization program. A partial hospitalization program for addiction is often considered a hybrid between an inpatient treatment program and one that occurs on an outpatient basis. Like many people seeking addiction treatment, you might follow a continuum of care, meaning you step down into lower levels of care as you’re ready.

Sequoia Recovery Centers offers a partial hospitalization program in Spokane. Along with our PHP, we offer other care levels, including medical detox and inpatient treatment. Our compassionate team of care providers can work to find the right level of care for you and create a treatment plan that’s aligned with your needs.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A partial hospitalization program in Washington or elsewhere can be the first step in addiction treatment for some people, or it could be a step down from inpatient treatment when they’re ready.

A partial hospitalization program or PHP is also often called a day treatment program. There’s a high level of care, with the primary difference between a PHP and inpatient treatment being that you can return home in the evenings. Otherwise, a similar sense of structure and intensity is shared between a PHP and a residential program. While it can vary depending on the center and your treatment plan, when you participate in a PHP, you might spend 4-6 hours a day at the treatment center, at least five days a week.

The next available level of care after a PHP is usually an intensive outpatient program or IOP. The recommendation from the American Society of Addiction Medicine is that a PHP has at least 20 hours of programming a week, while an IOP might provide as little as nine hours of treatment programming on a weekly basis.

A PHP can also include the provision of medical care and psychiatric services.

Whether it’s a Washington PHP drug and alcohol rehab center or one in another location, services that may be part of treatment include:

A PHP could be a good fit for someone with a healthy, stable living environment or staying in a sober living facility. PHPs can be ideal for someone who’s already completed residential treatment but is at high risk for relapse or is struggling to stay committed to their treatment.

While we tend to talk about a continuum of caretaking, a step-down approach, there can also be a step-up to a higher level of care. For example, if someone’s treatment team felt they weren’t progressing as they should in a lower level of care, like an intensive outpatient program, they might suggest moving up to a PHP.

As is true with most other types of addiction treatment, behavioral therapy is at the core of a PHP. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, is especially prevalent in addiction treatment because it helps you identify harmful or destructive thought patterns that influence your behavior and then change them. You might also participate in contingency management or motivational interviewing approaches to therapy during a PHP.

Inpatient Rehab

Who is a Partial Hospitalization Program Best For?

In addition to being a helpful and efficient substitute for inpatient care, a PHP in Spokane may also be a good choice for someone who is switching from inpatient to outpatient treatment. With the exception of the overnight stay, PHP enables patients to receive recovery treatment while having access to all the same resources as an inpatient treatment program. Our patients attend planned therapy sessions six days a week during the day, then head home at night.

PHP therapy is a slight step down from the round-the-clock supervision needed for inpatient treatment programs. Whether a patient has a mental health condition, a substance use disease, or a dual diagnosis, they will receive equal care, and after the day’s therapy is through, they can go back to their homes in the comfort of their own homes. For those who have a behavioral issue but do not require round-the-clock supervision, partial hospitalization programs are a useful alternative. Additionally, PHP therapy in Washington makes it simpler for patients to stop receiving care. Any person who may have an addiction and is enrolled in a treatment facility will eventually have to go back home.

PHP is a wonderful option for people with mental or behavioral health disorders who don’t need round-the-clock care, for people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol but have a strong support system at home, or for people who have finished inpatient treatment and want to continue receiving care.
