Getting Help for Heroin Addiction

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2020, over 900,000 people over the age of 12 in the United States used heroin. Even with these staggering numbers, we believe that mental and physical dependence can be overcome with the proper medical detox program.

The difficulty heroin-addicted individuals face when trying to stop using heroin alone is that the cravings, combined with the pain experienced during withdrawal, become too much to tolerate. This is one of the leading causes of relapse. The discomfort is too great, and the individual knows that by using it again, the pain can be alleviated.

What Exactly Is Heroin Addiction and How Can Sequoia Help?

Heroin is a well-known opioid that has lured many people into its deadly grip. The physical feeling that heroin promises is that of a highly addictive euphoria. Heroin knows no boundaries of class, race, background, or gender. Hundreds of people are overdosing on opioids daily across the nation.

Heroin is a drug derived from seeds of the opium poppy plant native to areas of Asia, Mexico, and Colombia. Morphine, a substance extracted from the plant, is the key ingredient in heroin. While most are familiar with the white powder form of heroin, it comes in other forms. In addition to the white powder (often considered the “pure” form of heroin), it is also a black sticky substance that resembles roofing tar called black tar heroin or a brown powder. Heroin can be smoked, injected, or snorted. No matter the method of use, the effects of heroin occur rapidly, often within seconds, lasting up to 30 minutes.

What Can I Expect From Treatment?

Heroin addiction leads to physical and psychological dependence. While physical detox symptoms can be overwhelming and sometimes dangerous, the psychological difficulties that often accompany heroin detox are also complex and challenging to manage outside of a medically-supported detox program in Washington. When you stop using heroin, withdrawal symptoms will develop rapidly. In many cases, acute withdrawal symptoms (the first detox symptoms) will occur within a few hours of your last dose.

The challenging nature of heroin withdrawal symptoms underscores the fact that medical detox is a key step in long-term heroin recovery. People who attempt to detox from home are rarely successful due to intense cravings and lack of proper medication and can encounter many medical complications. The safest option for heroin detox is to use a professional, medically supported Washington detox center, like Sequoia Recovery Centers. We offer a range of treatment options, including residential inpatient, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient. The different structures and levels of involvement of each program cater to you to fit with your schedule (such as juggling your work and family) while meeting your health needs and helping you as much as possible.

Heroin withdrawal symptoms include:

The symptoms of heroin withdrawal can begin within 6-12 hours of the last dosage. The drugs move through the system quickly, making the body need replenishment. In turn, the withdrawal process continues each day that the body goes without heroin. Symptoms are typically at their peak during days three to four. Every individual’s withdrawal process is different. The characteristics that make withdrawal from heroin vary are the time of usage and how much heroin was used. The symptoms can be more severe, and the withdrawal peak may be delayed.

Levels of Care for Heroin Addiction

Medically supervised detox is the first level of care during your recovery. With heroin addiction, many clients use FDA approved medications to help them during detox and with ongoing cravings.

FDA-approved medications require you to participate in ongoing therapy which can take the form of residential or outpatient programs.

Residential programs provide you with 24-hour care with supervision from licensed professionals throughout the course of your treatment plan.

Residential care is best for long-term addiction, severe symptoms, or those who have co-occurring disorders.

When you reach out to our team we will start with an initial assessment to determine which level of care is best once you complete detox. These programs can last anywhere from 30 days to 90 days and using a step down approach you are encouraged to transition into a lower level of care once you complete your residential program.

Outpatient care represents the next levels of care including:

  • PHP
  • IOP
  • Outpatient

Outpatient programs provide similar therapies to what you would get with a residential program with the key difference being you get to return home each day after treatment.

Given that there are three levels under this umbrella, you can choose from programs that meet once or twice per week all the way through programs that might meet six or more hours each day for therapy over the span of a couple of weeks. This flexibility enables clients who have other professional or personal applications to still get the help they need.

Our therapy programs are built on trusted, evidence-based treatment models proven to help you get well and put addiction behind you. Our Washington detox services include:

  • Medically-supported detox services (including residential inpatient, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient programs)
  • Comprehensive addiction treatment therapy (including traditional and holistic therapy models)
  • Detailed aftercare planning

We understand that seeking help to overcome heroin addiction is not easy. Our caring and compassionate team of medical and mental health providers is here to help you with each step of your treatment and recovery journey.

Get help for Heroin Addiction at Sequoia Detox Center

Heroin addiction is dangerous. Regular heroin use can lead to irreversible physical and psychological health effects. The most successful way to detox from heroin would be a medically-supervised heroin detox program. While detoxing at home is possible, many complications could result from going “cold turkey.” Proper medical detoxification and therapy are required to ensure a life of sustained recovery.

While heroin addicts are still likely to experience some withdrawal symptoms even while detoxing in a medically-supervised detox program, the added support of therapy during medical monitoring leads to a more successful recovery process. If you or a loved one are struggling with an addiction to heroin, don’t wait to seek help. Contact a member of our team today to learn more about how you can get help for heroin addiction at Sequoia Detox Center.
